Gander Doug Hurlbut Takes Long Last Flight
It is with great sorrow that the Pond learned Gander Doug Hurlbut took his Long Last Flight on January 23rd 2011. During his 13 years with the Flock Doug was a loyal Gander and rarely missed participating in an event. He was just 64 years of age and was enjoying retirement after many years with Aviva Canada and prior to that decades with the Canadian General Insurance Company at both of which he served as Claims Manager. A member of the Quarter Century Club and Past President of the Canadian Insurance Claims Managers Association, he enjoyed many friends in the industry and will be sadly missed. Doug died quietly at St Michaels Hospital after a very brief encounter with cancer with his wife and sister at his side
Doug was the adored husband of Susan Spierling and devoted brother to Susan Hurlbut-Luna and Randy Luna. He was predeceased by his mother Edith and Father Homer Hurlbut and was a beloved uncle to Mark and Jennifer Watkins, Elizabeth Leamy and Ryan Luna.
Without a doubt Gander Doug was a great friend to many and a mentor to the insurance claims community.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be sent to Toronto Western with thanks to the caregivers on 5B or to the Palliative Care Unit at St Michaels with thanks to all the angels there.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Doug’s life at the Eagle Club at 17 Elm St in Toronto on Sunday Jan 30 from 1pm to 7pm
A second celebration, Dougstock lll, will be held in the spring.
The Flock will hold a memorial service at the AGM in May and Doug will be honoured at the International Blue Goose Grand Nest Convention in Michigan this coming July.
